Foods that Help Fight Joint Problems

There are many conditions that can cause joint pain. Arthritis, one of the leading causes, affects over 46 million U.S. adults. The two major types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, known as "the wear and tear" arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, which is an inflammatory type of arthritis that takes place if the body's immune system is not properly functioning. Making healthier food choices can control the effects of these conditions, if not alleviate them altogether.

If you or someone you care about suffers from osteoarthritis, increasing the daily intake of antioxidants could bring about positive change.

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help slow wear and tear on the joints. It's found in a variety of fruits and vegetables , like

citrus

apples (which also contain vitamin E, another major antioxidant)

bananas

berries (raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries)

kiwi (one kiwi fruit provides more than 100% of the daily recommendation for vitamin C)

mangoes (also contains vitamin E)

canteloupe

cherries

apricots

pineapples

papayas

nectarines

black currants (a half cup of black currants provides more than 100% of the daily recommendation for vitamin C)

nectarines

carambolas (aka, star fruit)

----------

green beans

potatoes

watercress

green leafy vegetables

celery

cabbage

brocoli

cauliflower

brussel sprouts

bell peppers

and beets.

Vitamin C can also be found in whole grains , like

oats

wheat

barley

rye

millet

buckwheat

and brown rice.

And Here's an Extra Tip: Try adding fresh ginger to your salad dressing. Some osteoarthritis sufferers have reported that the regular use of ginger helps reduce pain and swelling in their joints.

If rheumatoid arthritis is your problem, cold water fish like sardines, herring, mackerel, halibut, tuna and salmon have high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are used by the body to make substances that reduce inflammation.

Food alone cannot supply sufficient vitamin nutrition, so don't forget your supplements.
